Hakata and the province of Chikuzen were vibrant through trade with East Asian countries and feudal lords of the surrounding areas tried to extend their ruling powers during the Sengoku Period. Hakata prospered as an international city during the Muromachi and Sengoku Periods (14c -- 16c A.D.)

 

4-1. Exchanges with Ming (China)
Introduces the founding and subsequent development of Japan-Ming trade which started in the form of submission to the Ming Dynasty(China).

 

4-2. Exchanges with Choson (Korea)
Different from the Japan-Ming relationship that developed as nation-to-nation exchange, Japan Choson relationship was promoted through multitudinous exchanges.

 

4-3. "Screen with Sonkai's Diary Written during His Trip to Korea"
Buddhist monk Sonkai kept a diary during his travels to and from Korea. This diary was written on the back of a screen which Sonkai brought back with him to Japan.

 

4-4. Distribution of Ceramic Wares; Muromachi to Sengoku Periods (14c -- 16c)
Ceramic wares imported from China, Korea and Southeast Asia were distributed throughout the country by feudal lords during the Sengoku Period.

 

4-5. The Occupation of the province of Chikuzen (Fukuoka Prefecture) and Hakata by the Ouchi Family
Introduces how feudal lord Ouchi, based in the province of Suo (Yamaguchi Prefecture), occupied Chikuzen and Hakata.

 

4-6. The Occupation of Cikuzen and Hakata by the Otomo Family
Introduces how feudal lord Otomo, based in the province of Bungo (Oita Prefecture),occupied Chikuzen and Hakata.

Introduces the life-style of the citizens of medieval Hakata through picture maps and steles.

 

4-9. Urban life in Medieval Times
Displays a section of a medieval road discovered during excavation in Hakata. History of Hakata is explained by a video.

 

4-10. Prayers in Medieval Times
Introduces relics and ruins such as sutra mounds and tombs which were part of the religious beliefs of the people in medieval times.

 

4-11. Life in Medieval Times
With excavated objects, revives the daily lives of the people of Hakata in medieval times. Shows relationship with China.
