In 1868, the Meiji Government was established after the Tokugawa Shogunate, which marked the beginning of the modernization of Japan.

Successful in bringing regional offices of the newly established national government and an Imperial University, Fukuoka City made a rapid development as a modern city spurred by expositions and Kyoshinkais (competitive exhibitions). Through materials and photographs of expositions and Kyoshinkais held in those days, concrete displays are made to show how Fukuoka was formulated as a modern city.

 

7-1. Establishment of Fukuoka Prefecture Seven prefectures
established after the Proclamation of the Abdiction of Clans and Establishment of Prefectures in 1871 were joined together in 1876, which formed the present Fukuoka Prefecture.

 

7-2. Birth of Fukuoka City
With the execution of the system for the city, town and village, Fukuoka City was founded on April 1, 1889 with the population of approximately 50,000 and area of about 5I.

7-6. Fukuoka City in the Meiji and Taisho Periods (1868〜1926)
Spurred by Kyoshinkais and Industrial Expositions, infrastructure for transportation came to be better established. Fukuoka started to aspire for the top city of Kyushu.

 

7-7. Fukuoka City in the Showa Period (1926〜1989)
In 1876, the Fukuoka Prefectual Office moved to Tenjin, allowing Tenjin to become a greater commercial area as well as a zone of government offices.

 

7-8. Modernism of Hakata
In the 1920's, taxis, department stores and Cafes started to appear in Hakata.

 

7-9. Fukuoka City during and after the War
Although the City received air raids on June 19, 1945, post-War restoration was made utilizing such opportunities as the holding of the 3rd National Athletic Meet.
