F-1. Nagare and Age Groups in Hakata
Hakata has a townsmen's group called Nagare which acts as the central body of social life and festivals. Within Nagare, there are smaller groups made according to age.

 

F-2. Co-operation among Townsmen
Townsmen who normally pursue their individual life get together in one for Yamakasa Festibval and act as members of Nagare.

 

F-3. Oiyama
Hakata Gion Yamakasa is Hakata's biggest festival and goes into climax at Oiyama held on the early morning of July 15.

 

F-4. Yamakasa Votive Pictures of villagers and Coast Inhabitants
Villagers and coast inhabitants after participating in Yamakasa as supporters would offer the shrine Yamakasa Votive Pictures in commemoration of their participation.

 

F-5. Matsubayashi and Dontaku
New Year's event of Hakata that started in medieval times, but is presently called Dontaku, which has become a festival in which a great number of people participate.

 

F-6. Townsmen's Occupation
Towns in the Meiji Period had lines of various shops. Ornaments called Mitake Zaiku displayed at the front of shops attracted villagers and coast inhabitants to towns.

 

F-7. Life and Rituals in Towns
Important rituals held in towns were more frequent and gorgeous, which started to influence villages and fishing villages to have the same rituals.

 

F-8. Townsmen's Belief
Belife in Ebisu God was very strong in towns, praying for business prosperity.

 

F-9. Gifts
Gifts were given in annual events and for the important rituals in life. More frequent in towns compared with villages and fishing villages.

 

F-10. Kyorakusha Theater
It was a great enjoyment for villagers and coast inhabitants to go to theater in the town.
